The Parish
Council would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year.
Village Maintenance 2006 Both the
County and District Councils have notified us of the possible cuts in the
services next year. Grants allocated to
this village are likely to be reduced.
The cuts may have an effect, for example, on our street lighting, grass
cutting, road maintenance and re-cycling repayments. The Parish Council will be monitoring this situation and will
keep you informed.
Pest Control and Waste Fees.
South Cambridgeshire District Council have now withdrawn their free
service and will in future be making a charge.
Details of the costs can be found in your copy of South Cambs magazine. Jocelyn Flitton- Parish Clerk
A New Year, New Activities, New Resolutions!
The New Year will see all the regular classes
continue, plus new and additional activities, some may even interest some
Ickletonians! To keep you informed this
is a summary of what is new.
Scrabble – The University of the Third Age is holding a
series of sessions for the ‘wordsmiths’ starting on Friday afternoons from 13th
January (a good time for anyone who feels his or her luck may hold on such an
auspicious date). Contact the Booking
Secretaries for details.
Patchwork – Another short series of classes starts on
Wednesday mornings - the first session on 8th February. This is a very social
occasion and anyone interested is asked to contact Cherry Vernon for full
details.
Children’s Tennis Coaching – The successful course that has just
finished is being repeated for a further six weeks from early January. Currently details are still being finalised,
(it is likely to be on late Tuesday afternoons). Please contact us, David or
Jean, so we can pass on all the details once they are finalised.
Arabic Dance – This has been an amazing success story for the
Village Hall. An additional beginners’ class, suitable for women from 16
upwards, is starting on Thursday evenings from 6.20 p.m. for just one
hour. It is a 12 week course, the cost
just £72.00.
If anyone wants to book the Hall for an event, or
needs information on any activity, please ring us, we’ll do all we can to help. David & Jean Whitaker

Well done to all those who contributed to the
fantastic Barn Dance on 26th November, from cooking food and
decorating the hall, through to clearing up at the end. As usual, the caller and his band managed to
get us all dancing, necessitating frequent liquid consumption! Especial thanks to Rosemary and Neil
McKillen, who did all the excellent organisation.

- Churchwardens
Who said the Church couldn’t change? New things are
happening in the churches of Duxford, Hinxton and Ickleton in the New Year and
we hope you’ll want to be part of it all.
All three churches are trying out new services. Our
plans are based on two assumptions:
·
that most of
us work best with some structure in our lives
·
that a clear
shared structure will make it easier for newcomers and help to strengthen
Christian life and witness in all our churches
We hope people will make choices about worship. Some
will want to worship in their own church regularly, whatever the service on
offer. There may be others for whom a particular style of worship is important,
or a particular time of day is convenient. We hope that people will experiment
and discover what is right for them, and that in this way we can make the best
use of the rich heritage we have inherited both in our church buildings and in
our prayer books and worship.
Priests are expected to say the services of Morning
and Evening Prayer (the Daily Office) every day. Your priest-in-charge
confesses to a lack of discipline in that respect, so in the weeks up to
Christmas I experimented with saying the Daily Offices in church, at a
different church each day. The whole experience proved enormously valuable:
·
It made me free
up time each day for prayer
·
It is
helping me to ‘get to know’ the churches by praying in them
·
It is
establishing a pattern of ministry to the villages
It’s not a service for which there needs to be a
congregation, but at least you’ll know where to find the priest-in-charge at
the beginning and end of the day!
January sees the first of our new-style Family
Services. These services are being devised and led by members of our
three-parish Worship Group, with keyboard as the instrument of choice (we would
welcome other instrumentalists too!), a short service and refreshments
afterwards. We hope to attract not only children and young people and their
families, but all who are concerned that the church should connect with the
people of our villages. We hope 4 o’clock will be a good time and that you’ll
come along and give us a try!
In response to requests, we are offering two courses
at the beginning of the year:
·
Confirmation. A
meeting at Duxford Rectory on Tuesday 17th January at 7.30 pm for adults and
young people over 12 years of age - for those who want to explore full
membership of the Church of England.
·
Marriage
Preparation. A DVD based course (from Alpha) discussing
issues in marriage. Suitable for those planning their wedding and as a
refresher for people who may want a second look at their own marriage. A
meeting to gauge interest at Duxford Rectory on Thursday 19th January at 8.00
pm.
On behalf of the people of all three
churches, thank you for your support in the last 12 months. Do join us for new
things in the new year! Happy New Year to you all! Andrew

said in church:
Monday Duxford, Tuesday Ickleton, Wednesday Hinxton,
Thursday Ickleton, Friday Duxford.
The Barn Dance held recently in the Village Hall
attracted a good crowd of all ages. It
proved to be a real family occasion, with the dancing expertly orchestrated by
caller Adrian Besant, ably supported by the excellent Brookfield Band. Nobody was shy in taking to the floor and a
good night was had by all.
Our thanks to those who helped set up and decorate
the tables and to tidy up afterwards. Thanks also to those who cooked the food
and to the village hall stalwarts Gordon Woolhouse & David Whitaker for
their assistance. Many thanks too, to
those who donated the raffle prizes. As
usual Dilip and Sunita of Costcutter Express provided the essential ticket
sales – the contribution they make to the life of the village is invaluable.
This was a family event for the village and it really
lived up to our expectations, so many, many thanks to all who supported it. Rosemary McKillen
Volunteer drivers are needed for the above scheme
which covers residents of lckleton unable to make other arrangements for
transport to local medical appointments, usually Sawston or Saffron Walden. lt
does not include journeys to Addenbrooke’s or social journeys. For the security
of vulnerable passengers, the County Council now requires drivers to be vetted
by the Criminal Records Bureau. This has proved controversial, but please do
not be put off by it. Registration is a simple matter of providing name,
address and date of birth. So if you have a little time to spare during usual
surgery hours, and would like to help, please ring me for more information.

The two events organised last month, to raise money
for the above, were again a great success.
The events raised a total of £300.00, as well as
providing a couple of lovely social evenings.
Both nights were very well supported and the
committee would like to thank everyone who helped organise or took part, for
their support and generosity.
Hope to see you all in the New Year.
Ickleton Social Club Committee
Josie and I would like to thank everyone who gave so
generously to the Addenbrooke’s Kidney Patients’ Association on the occasion of
Josie’s 80th birthday this October. A wonderful total of £450.00 was
reached.
Below are copies of extracts from two separate letters
received from Dr. John R. Bradley, Consultant Physician Nephrologist and the
AKPA, showing their sincere appreciation for everyone’s kind donations. Again, many thanks from us. Josie and Lavinia Barker
Dear Ms’s Barker,
Thank
you very much for the exceptionally kind donation we have received following
your mother-in-law’s recent 80th birthday party. It is very kind of her to think of us and I
hope you will pass my thanks on to her.
I have forwarded the donations on to the Addenbrooke’s Kidney Patients’
Association and I am sure they will be in touch with you separately. I know that it will help to improve the
lives of kidney patients.
Yours sincerely Dr.
John R. Bradley
Consultant Physician &
Nephrologist
Dear Ms’s Barker,
Dr.
Bradley has passed on the very generous donation resulting from your
mother-in-law’s 80th birthday.
We are greatly touched and appreciative of her very kind gesture. Please give her our heartfelt thanks. The Addenbrooke’s Kidney Patients’
Association is continuously striving to help kidney patients in our area and in
addition to the large amounts of money we spend on expensive equipment, we also
make individual grants each month to help individual patients. Your donation is gratefully received and I
can assure you will be put to good use.
Yours sincerely Tony Weaver
Chairman AKPA
Our December meeting was not as well supported as
previous meetings have been, maybe preparing for Christmas had something to do
with it!
However, 30 members came to hear about growing
ornamental grasses in the garden. This was accompanied by a slide show
demonstrating the best way to grow grasses for the best effect.
A very good raffle was held whilst members enjoyed
mince pies and sausage rolls.
There will be no meeting in January.
The next meeting will be on February 1st
2006 at 8.00 p.m.
The speaker will be Joe Sharman – subject
‘Snowdrops’.
Best Bloom competition will be a hellebore. Cynthia Rule
The collection in the village this year amounted to
£700.25, including the Church collection on Remembrance Sunday, which was sadly
less than last year’s record. Thank you
to all who gave so generously.
Without the efforts of our band of collectors, none
of this would be possible. Many many
thanks therefore go to Sheila Birch, Jackie Casement, Pat Facer, Lena Frost,
Yvonne Hall, Judy Holt, Caroline Lewis, Judy Marshall, Sally Pearce, Hilary
Rule and Claire Wilson. Thanks also to Costcutter Express, the Ickleton Lion,
the Social Club and the Garden and Aquatics Centre, for their help by
displaying collecting boxes. Malcolm Hall - Honorary
Organsier

Over Christmas we'll dispose of up to 30% more glass
bottles and aluminium and steel drink cans than usual. As part of your
Christmas preparations, here are South Cambridgeshire's waste and recycling
arrangements.
Residents with wheeled bins are being given a revised
black wheeled bin collection service throughout the Christmas period.
Green wheeled bin collections will be temporarily
suspended as garden waste is virtually nil from mid December to mid January,
whereas the volumes of glass, cans and residual waste peaks during the first
and second weeks after Christmas and New Year.
Additional resources will be provided on 9th
January to collect additional glass cans and paper.
Please note any excess or side waste can be taken to
the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Milton and Thriplow.
Note that these will be closed on New Year’s Eve and
New Year’s Day.
Householders should check their collection calendars
in South Cambs magazine or on www.scambs.gov.uk
Telephone ' 0840 450063 by 3.30 p.m. the following
day (and 8.00 p.m. on the scheduled day).
Cardboard
Flatten all cardboard boxes and stack them in the
green wheeled bin.
If residents are unable to home compost, kitchen food
waste can be placed in either wheeled bin.
Wrapping paper
The inks and the metallic content of some wrapping
papers means they are not suitable for recycling or composting. Our advice is
not to recycle or compost Christmas wrapping paper -please put it in the black
bin.
There are twenty plastics banks throughout the
district able to collect plastic with the 1, 2 or 3
logos. Rinse, flatten, place bottles in the plastic
recycling banks and lids in the black wheeled
bin.
Rinse and crush cans and put them in the green box.
If you can't re-use your cooking foil, rinse it and place it in the green box.
Rinse and put them in the green box.
Chop up your tree and place in the green bin, providing
the branches/trunk are not more than 3 inches thick. Alternatively, take it to
the Household Waste Recycling Cente.
Put them in the green wheeled bin for composting.
Place in textile recycling banks or donate to charity
shops.
